Early Life and Career

Madeline Gail Kahn was born on September 29, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts. Of Russian Jewish descent, she began her performing career in the early 1960s, appearing in off-Broadway productions and cabaret shows.

In 1972, Kahn made her film debut in "What's Up, Doc?" opposite Peter Bogdanovich and Ryan O'Neal. Her breakout role came the following year in Mel Brooks' western comedy "Blazing Saddles," where she played the memorable character Lili von Shtupp.

Critical Acclaim and Awards

Kahn's career continued to flourish throughout the 1970s and 1980s. She received four Tony Award nominations, winning in 1973 for her performance in the musical "On the Twentieth Century."

In addition to her Tony Award, Kahn also received two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in "Paper Moon" (1973) and "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1976).
