WEB: Bianca - The Mysterious Uranian Moon
A Brief Overview
WEB Bianca is a small inner moon of Uranus, discovered in 1986 by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. Despite its relatively modest size, Bianca is situated in a unique location within the Uranian system, making it an intriguing subject of study for planetary scientists.
Discovery and Orbital Characteristics
Bianca was discovered from the images taken by Voyager 2 on January 23, 1986, and was given the temporary designation S/1986 U 9. The spacecraft observed Bianca in low-resolution images, providing limited information about its surface features and composition.
Bianca's orbit lies within the epsilon (ε) ring of Uranus, a narrow and dusty ring located approximately 8,000 km from Bianca's orbital path. This unique location has led to speculation about Bianca's potential role in the formation or maintenance of the ring.
Physical Properties
Little is known about Bianca's physical properties beyond its size and orbital characteristics. Its diameter is estimated to be around 51 km, making it one of the smallest known moons of Uranus. Neither its surface composition nor its albedo (reflectivity) has been determined.
