Cicadas 2024 Kentucky Map

Trillions of Cicadas Expected to Emerge This Spring

Interactive Map Shows Where and When Brood XIX and Brood XIII Will Appear

Massive Cicada Broods Expected to Emerge Soon

In a few weeks, trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge from the ground this spring. Brood XIX and Brood XIII, two of the largest broods of periodical cicadas, are expected to emerge in 2024. Brood XIX will emerge in states such as Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, while Brood XIII will emerge in states like Iowa, Wisconsin, and possibly Michigan.

Periodical cicadas are unique in that they have a long lifespan underground, typically lasting 13 or 17 years. Once they emerge, they have a short lifespan of only a few weeks. During this time, they mate and lay eggs, and then they die.

The emergence of periodical cicadas is a fascinating natural phenomenon. It is also a reminder of the importance of protecting our environment. Cicadas play an important role in the food chain, and they can help to improve soil quality.
