SK Sturm Graz secure narrow victory in friendly against HNK Rijeka

Graz, Austria - January 12, 2024

SK Sturm Graz emerged victorious in a friendly encounter against HNK Rijeka, securing a 1-0 win at the Čatež Sports Park in Slovenia.

The match, which took place under cloudy skies, saw both teams field a mixture of first-team regulars and fringe players. Sturm Graz, under the guidance of manager Christian Ilzer, showed their attacking intent from the outset, creating several early chances.

The breakthrough came in the 25th minute, courtesy of a well-worked team move. Jakob Jantscher played a delightful through ball into the path of Emanuel Emegha, who shrugged off the challenge of HNK Rijeka defender Filip Braut and coolly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Andrija Vukovic.

HNK Rijeka, managed by former Sturm Graz boss Goran Tomić, responded well to the setback and had their fair share of opportunities to equalize. However, the Sturm Graz defense, marshaled by experienced center-back Gregory Wüthrich, remained resolute.

As the second half progressed, the tempo of the game slowed slightly, with both teams making several substitutions. Sturm Graz continued to probe for a second goal, but HNK Rijeka goalkeeper Vukovic was in inspired form, making a string of impressive saves.

In the end, Sturm Graz held on to their slender lead to secure the victory. The result will be a confidence booster for the Austrian side as they prepare for the resumption of their domestic league campaign.

Sturm Graz will next face Rapid Wien in a highly anticipated Austrian Bundesliga clash on April 19, 2024. HNK Rijeka, meanwhile, will turn their attention to their upcoming Croatian Cup semi-final match against Dinamo Zagreb.
